Abstract
A threatened abortion is presumed when any bloody discharge of vaginal bleeding during the first half of pregnancy occurs, and quite commonplace since one out of four or five pregnant women has vaginal spotting or heavier bleeding during early months of gestation. Among them one half abort and in the cases of continued gestation an increased risk of suboptimal pregnancy outcome in the form of preterm delivery, low birth weight and perinatal death are observed, however the risk of a malformed infant does not appear to be increased significantly. The effect of vaginal bleeding during the first half of pregnancy on fetal outcome was retrospectively analysed in 85cases and compared with a control group of 506. Early pregnancy bleeding was found to be associated with more preterm deliveries, lower birth weight and also increased the perinatal morbidity than that of control group. The frequency of congenital anomalies, growth retarded infants and incidence of placental complications were unaffected. These data suggest that the vaginal bleeding during the first half of pregnancy is a useful indicator of risk for suboptimal pregnancy outcome.
